Bericht door Robert Delhaye »

Hi George, thanks for starting this topic!
London is my official residence (basically through heritage), and my property is on the Belgravia side of Pimlico Road, which is quite near to the River Thames. It always strikes me to see tugs on the river Thames towing while using a very short line. This obviously means that the tug can't tow properly as the screw can't deliver properly.
I guess this short connection has everything to do with the river being a quite busy one.
Several tugs have capable engines with sometimes an impressive amount of bhp. And some have slow turning engines of makes not really common on the European continent, like big Lister engines.
In this light it's rather amazing that pushtugboats aren't common on the river.

Well I'm very happy to see all these pictures! Do you own pictures of tugs at the time owned by Sealink, and the companies before and beyond, regarding this ferry-company?

Kindest regards,

Robert Delhaye.

Good to hear from you Robert. I'm not a hands-on towage expert but think the short ropes used on the Thames were due to the strong tides and yesterday someone with experience told me it was a requirement of the PLA (river authority). The traditional Thames barges were known as 'swim barges' and had a distinctive sloping bow/stern so that would help to divert the prop power below the barge, although they were quite shallow anyway. You can see some in this photo ...

Re Sealink, I will have one of their MEECHING at Newhaven, before that they were owned by British Rail and the pre-war railway companies and I have some on file.
